Review by Julian Kuelshammer

Sibusile Xaba's latest album, "Open Letter to Adoniah," is a soulful and meditative journey through the South African artist's musical and spiritual influences. From the opening track, "Emazulwini," Xaba's intricate fingerpicking on the guitar and soaring vocals transport the listener to a place of tranquility and introspection.

Throughout the album, Xaba draws on a range of traditional African musical styles, including maskandi and mbaqanga, fused with jazz, blues, and rock influences. The result is a rich and textured tapestry of sound that showcases Xaba's virtuosity on the guitar and his ability to weave together different musical traditions.

Standout tracks include "Umdali," with its haunting melody and soaring harmonies, and "Inkanyezi," a lively and upbeat number that showcases Xaba's percussive guitar playing. The album's title track, "Open Letter to Adoniah," is a powerful and poignant tribute to Xaba's late father and a reflection on the enduring legacy of love and family.

About Sibusile Xaba

Sibusile carries forth the Maskandi / Mbaqanga tradition of the KwaZulu Natal midlands, from where he originates. Steeped in the lineage of Zulu guitar giant Madala Kunene (Sibusiles first mentor) & warrior chants of vocal master, Shaluza Max, he not only owns these influences, but pushes the envelope as only a maestro with a keen ear for the future does. Sibusile has also for the last few years been mentored by the legendary Dr Philip Tabane (the originator of Malombo music).
