Review by Dan Howard

Tallahassee is the ninth studio album by the American indie rock band Mountain Goats. Released in 2002, it was a concept album that told the story of a dysfunctional couple living in the titular Florida city. The album received critical acclaim for its raw and emotional lyrics, as well as its stripped-down musical arrangements.

The album opens with the haunting "Tallahassee," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The lyrics are dark and introspective, dealing with themes of addiction, regret, and self-destruction. However, despite the heavy subject matter, the album is also filled with moments of beauty and tenderness, such as the gentle ballad "First Few Desperate Hours" and the soaring "See America Right."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "No Children," a bitter breakup song that has become a fan favorite. The song's chorus, "I hope that our few remaining friends / Give up on trying to save us / I hope we come up with a failsafe plot / To piss off the dumb few that forgave us," perfectly encapsulates the album's themes of desperation and self-sabotage.

Just as it's extremely annoying when someone tries too hard to be funny, the same can be said for someone who tries too hard to be sad (lookin at you, Lou). So here's 'Tallahassee', an album that reads as just an extremely catchy folk set until you pay a bit more attention to the lyrics, which tell of the deterioration of the marriage between two people who genuinely love each other but can't stand being together. The greatest thing about the album, aside from John Darnielle's fantastic lyrics, is the fact that it doesn't try to FORCE you to be sad: This isn't doomy post-punk or melancholic piano-music (which isn't to say there's no piano in it), but catchy, enjoyable, tightly-composed folk. The lyrics speak for themselves to anyone willing to listen.
