Review by Nassos Kappa

Lonnie Donegan's King of Skiffle is a timeless classic that showcases the raw, unbridled energy of the genre. Released in 1957, the album features 12 tracks that capture the essence of skiffle music - a blend of folk, blues, and jazz that originated in the United States and gained popularity in Britain during the 1950s.

Donegan's distinctive voice and virtuosic guitar playing are on full display throughout the album, as he leads his band through rollicking renditions of classic tunes like "Rock Island Line" and "John Henry." The arrangements are simple but effective, with the focus squarely on the rhythm and the interplay between the instruments.

What sets King of Skiffle apart from other albums of its era is the sheer joy and enthusiasm that permeates every track. From the infectious sing-along chorus of "Lost John" to the foot-stomping beat of "Wabash Cannonball," Donegan and his band are clearly having a blast, and their energy is infectious.

This sounds totally influenced by American blues/appalachian music. Got the brit kids to get guitars and then they dug deeper and "BOOOOOOM"!!! Perfect storm!!

Great. Even Jaques Brel did not put more into it than Lonnie. Memories of the Beach Carnival in Aberdeen come flooding through.

I love how this music was something that developed over so much time, distance and many varied cultures. You can hear the influence of the early European cultures that are where bluegrass, country, and blues have much of their roots. You can hear the influence than African rhythm and music had on each of those genres, and looking back many decades later; you can now hear the coming explosion many more genres to come. I look forward to even more genres of music to present themselves to us in the future. ^-^
I particularly enjoy hearing the old Scottish musics influence being brought back home to Scotland from America, similar to how the blues was brought back to America by the Brits. It's such a fantastic thing how cultures influence each other, and how that influence shapes the development of more cultures to come.

Loss of culture only happens when some are oppressed, otherwise there is no reason to fear loss of culture. Just listen to the music people still play from many hundreds of years ago. Everything comes back around, and really they never left, just things go in and out of popular style.

During my RAF-H days at Wegberg in Germany, we formed a small skiffle group with tea box base, washboard etc. and had a wonderful time learning and playing these old skiffle classics at hospital dances.concerts etc. Wonderful days.

Another example of british stealing American culture and repacking and calling they own. Skiffle music that's what brought the horror show that is the Beatles. They started out as Skiffle band right.
