Review by Natasha Orme

Baubles Bangles And Beads, an album by Kirby Stone Four, is a delightful collection of jazz tunes that is sure to please any fan of the genre. The album is a perfect blend of classic jazz and modern sounds, with each track showcasing the impressive musical talent of the band.

The album features a variety of upbeat and lively tracks, including "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Tangerine," as well as more mellow and soulful numbers like "My One and Only Love" and "Round Midnight." Each track is expertly arranged and performed, with the band's tight harmonies and intricate instrumentation creating a rich and dynamic sound.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," a lively tune that features a catchy melody and infectious rhythm. The band's use of percussion and brass instruments on this track is particularly impressive, adding depth and texture to the already vibrant sound.

I' am sure Kirby Stone had this arrangement in mind a lot earlier than it came out in 1958. It should have been released around the time of Les Paul and Mary Ford's hits much earlier. But by 1958, Rock n roll was dominating the airwaves. Possibly "So Rare" by Jimmy Dorsey became a hit ina 1957.. and the big shot execs decided to release the first hit of the Kirby Stone four. Misnamed because I would have bought the record but KNX LA never announced the name of the singers.. I still love to hear it to this day!

A strange, seductive hybrid of pop, jazz and rockabilly. Perfect for those sophisticated "Mad Men" get-togethers. What the hell did I know then? I was turning six.

I remember hearing this song for the first time in April 1988 on the radio. I thought back then this music was better than what was made at the time.
I was about ten years old, travelling on the old Sunlander train with my Grandparents, the rythum of this song matched the sounds of train.I still can hear it after all these years.Great music.
Not sure if I like this--notice that the guys don't harmonize even once throughout the entire recording. If you're not in harmony, what's the point of a vocal group?

Bumped into this while browsing and I was instantly transported back to the late 1950s. I was just a kid back then and Ihis tune was played on the radio all the time. Interestingly, this song was originally in the stage production of "Kismet" earlier in the 50s (and it didn't sound anything like this). The Kirby Stone Four were quite popular back then.
We had this track on a compilation record growing up in the late 70s and early 80s, even then it had been out for 20 years but still had this timeless quality about it
As you wander aimlessly through the isles at Kmart looking for nothingness generally, this tune had to be part of their Muzak line up for sure.

For those claiming this is the original and best version have not lived as long as I have. While I have an original Kirby Stone 33 1/3 RPM album by them, they are not the original recording of this song. It was one of the songs in the 1953 BROADWAY musical called KISMET, the music adapted from composer Alexander Borodin’s Prince Igor, and subsequently made into a 1955 film musical starting Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, Dolores Gray, and Vic Damone….if my addled memory serves me well. The Broadway stars were Alfred Drake and Dolores Morrow. The Broadway and movie versions have a sad, or wistful tone while the Kirby 1958 version is uplifting…but all are emotionally moving in their own way. I love them all.
